SUMMARY

As part of the imperial family, every move by Chu Yuan in this game of chess is made with apprehension, fearing that with a moment of inattentiveness, the whole match will be lost in a single move.

Ascending to the throne at eighteen, not half a year passes before civil strife erupts in Yun Nan. Though the thoughts of the old guard at the imperial court are not exactly identical, they are all waiting to see how the new emperor will put an end to this.

Unexpectedly, before this side could make a move, a few thousand miles away, the King of Xi Nan, Duan Bai Yue, had already personally commanded troops to attack in all directions; not half a year had passed when peace was restored.

It’s a slow burn story about two people in love and the things they are willing to do for each other.

FAN SUMMARY:

A young Emperor who is trying to stabilise his rule, and a Vassal King of Xinan who proves his loyalty for favours, all the while being rumoured as one who holds sinister ambitions towards the throne…OR so it seems to the eyes of the populace.

The novel follows Duan Baiyue, the ML, as he does his best to help the MC, Chu Yuan’s ambition to make his nation stable and prosper, all to fulfil their lifelong dream of peacefully coming together as a couple after fulfilling their duties.

The politics is not hard to follow, story pacing is rather consistent. Mutual pining despite being aware of each other’s feelings. Not quite slow burn, but the obstacles in the way of their love will make you desperately wish for their happiness.

Emperor of Da Chu.
He's a very smart ruler trained in martial arts and knows how to make do when he's faced with tough situations. He's shy and a tsundere around Duan Baiyue though he won't hesitate to make the first move if necessary. Seems conceited but is just kind and a total softie!

Duan Baiyue (ML)

The Xi Nan King. The misunderstood king rumored to have a bug infestation in his manor. Highly skilled in martial arts and very loyal to Chu Yuan. Acts shamelessly around Chu Yuan however cares for him deeply and knows his limits when teasing him.
